McCaffery Injury History: Christian McCaffrey has been hurt for 23 of the last 33 games that the Carolina Panthers have played. But coach Matt Rhule won’t keep his best back off the field out of fear that another season will be messed up.
“I don’t waste my time worrying, ‘Hey, is Christian going to get hurt?'” Rhule told the Associated Press on Wednesday. “There is only one way we think about Christian: to attack.” After getting 1,000 yards and 1,000 touchdowns in 2019, McCaffrey only played in three games in 2020 and seven games in 2019.
Rhule called McCaffrey a “dominant, dominant” football player and said running backs often get hurt. “He plays a position with many contacts and a high chance of getting hurt,” Rhule said. “We’re going to play him and put him out there. We want our best players to stay with us as long as possible.”
The Panthers got D’Onta Foreman from the Tennessee Titans as a free agent this offseason. He will join Chuba Hubbard and give the Panthers more options if they get hurt again. In the first two games of 2021, the Panthers gave McCaffrey nearly 30 touches each time.
Then, in Week 3, the back got hurt in the hamstring. He tried to come back later in the season. From Weeks 9 to 12, he averaged 17 touches before going back on the shelf. McCaffrey said that some of his injuries were caused by random things.
McCaffrey said, “Two 300-pound guys fell on my ankle while I was already on the ground.” “I’d love to know if someone has made a drill to stop that from happening because I’d do that every day if there was one.”
McCaffrey isn’t expected to play in the preseason when the season starts, so it will be interesting to see how the Panthers handle his workload. Does Rhule give him 30 touches again, or does he provide some of the work to Foreman and Hubbard so that CMC stays fresh and can play the whole season?
