Michael Giacchino recently completed his work on the Marvel TV particular Werewolf by Night and has already secured his upcoming directing gig. It also draws inspiration from classic monster movies. The Oscar-winning composer will helm a reboot of the science fiction monster movie Them, claims Deadline.
Giacchino makes his feature film directing debut with the reboot. The plot of Them!, a 1954 film adaptation, centers on discovering a nest of enormous radioactive ants in New Mexico. Two queen ants escape, causing chaos as they clash with Los Angeles residents.
One of the best enormous monster films from the 1950s, it garnered an Oscar nomination for special effects using mechanical bugs that were so lifelike that there was a rumor that genuine ants were magnified for the film. According to the word, Giacchino is now talking with authors to begin production soon. He also intends to score the movie.
“There’s always a movie in your mind that never leaves your head,” said Giacchino. “For me, that’s Them! It wasn’t until much later that I learned what it was about — the nuclear age.”
“What I love about Them! is exactly what it’s called: Them! It’s about the other, the unknown, which one refuses or can’t understand,” Giacchino continued. “The current version of Them! is about immigration, and to tell a story about the subject through a lens of this insane science fiction monster movie.”
Giacchino had a busy year in 2022. He wrote the scores for Batman, Jurassic World Dominion, Lightyear, and Thor: Love and Thunder. The gifted composer was also the director and composer for Werewolf by Night.
