One of the six children of Edward Joseph Pence Jr. and Ann Jane “Nancy” Cawley, who managed a chain of gas stations, and Edward Joseph Pence, Michael Richard Pence was born on June 7, 1959, in Columbus, Indiana.

His father served in the American Army during the Korean War and was awarded the Bronze Star in 1953; Pence keeps a copy of the award’s letter of commendation and a photo of the ceremony in his office.


His mother is of Irish origin, and his father was of German and Irish descent. Edward Joseph Pence, Sr., his paternal grandfather, was a stockyard worker in Chicago. He was given the name Richard Michael Cawley in honor of his maternal grandfather, Richard Michael Cawley, who immigrated to America from Doocastle, County Mayo, Ireland, via Ellis Island and went on to work as a bus driver in Chicago, Illinois. The grandparents of his paternal grandmother were Irish natives from Doonbeg in County Clare.

Pence identified as a Catholic in a 1994 news report, but by 1995, he and his family had joined the Grace Evangelical Church, a large evangelical congregation. Pence claimed in 2013 that his family was “kind of looking for a church. Pence and his wife attended College Park Church, a nondenominational church in Indianapolis, on a regular basis in 2016.

He has identified himself as “a born-again, evangelical Catholic,” “a Christian, a conservative, and a Republican, in that order.
