Two New York Democratic lawmakers urged GOP leaders on Sunday to “forthrightly cooperate” with all inquiries into freshman Republican Rep. George Santos, who admitted to fabricating significant portions of his résumé.
Reps. Dan Goldman and Ritchie Torres requested in a letter sent on Sunday that Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., the chair of the House GOP Caucus, and Dan Conston, president of the Congressional Leadership Fund, “proactively and forthrightly cooperate with all current and future investigations into Mr. Santos, including the investigation by the House Committee on Ethics that Speaker McCarthy confirmed this week.”
“In addition, we urge you to inform the American people about your knowledge of Mr. Santos’s web of deceit before the election so that the public understands whether and to what extent you were complicit in Mr. Santos’s fraud on his voters.”

The letter references a recent New York Times article describing GOP leaders’ knowledge of Santos’ untrue statements before the November midterm elections.
According to Goldman and Torres, the investigation “expanded upon the extent to which each of you had at least some foreknowledge of Mr. Santos’s lies.” “Unfortunately, you have refused to make any public comments on Mr. Santos’s fraudulent candidacy, nor have you disclosed to the public your understanding of Mr. Santos’s blatant deception and lies before the election,” the letter continued. “Even now, after eight other Republican members of Congress have called for Mr. Santos to resign.”
The Democratic lawmakers claimed Stefanik continued to be one of Santos’ most ardent backers throughout his campaign, and one of her top advisers helped Santos continue to win even after numerous staff members were said to have left after the “vulnerability study.”
According to Goldman and Torres, “it is one thing for a candidate like Mr. Santos to entice voters to support him based on a network of lies.” But if senior Republican officials decided to cooperate with Mr. Santos’s lies throughout the campaign, that is entirely another.
In a complaint submitted last week, Goldman and Torres demanded that the House Ethics Committee look into Santos’ financial disclosure filings and claimed that his “sparse and puzzling” records violated the Ethics in Government Act. For his most recent campaign, they said that he failed to submit “timely disclosure filings” and that his public remarks “contradicted some information” in his 2022 financial disclosure.
The demands for Santos’ resignation from House Republicans have gotten louder during the past week due to statements made by New York lawmakers and state GOP leaders. McCarthy, the leader of the GOP’s precarious House majority, has not joined the calls.
McCarthy told reporters on Thursday that “he has a long way to go to earn trust, but the one thing I do know is you apply the Constitution equally to all Americans.” “His district’s voters chose to elect him. He is sitting. He is a Republican Conference member. He will appear before Ethics as a result of the issues with him. He will be held accountable if anything is discovered wrong in the same way everyone else in this body would.
Santos has refused to back down. He declared on Thursday that he would step down “if 142 people want me to.” Later, he explained that he spoke of the more than 142,000 voters in New York’s 3rd Congressional District who chose him in November’s election. “Until those same 142,000 people tell me they don’t want me,” declared Santos, he will serve in Congress.
