Thirlby was born to an advertising professional mother and a contractor father on October 6, 1986, in New York City. She grew up in the East Village of Manhattan and went to Friends Seminary in the city’s Gramercy area, where she graduated with a class of 57.
She also studied at the Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts and the French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts in upstate New York. She trained in stage combat with the British Academy of Stage and Screen Combat (BASSC). She attended seminars at the American Globe Theatre and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
