Super Bowl 58, taking place on Sunday in Las Vegas, will be the culmination of a half-century journey for Reba McEntire as she sings the national anthem.
The reason behind this is that the legendary performer’s career took off after she was discovered in 1974 in Oklahoma City while singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the National Finals Rodeo. Even if it’s a relief, McEntire assured us that she’s still doing her assignments.
“I get ready by making sure I’m ready. “I’ve been singing the national anthem in the shower and when we get in the car,” the country singer remarked during Thursday’s press briefing for the Apple Music Super Bowl halftime show.
“Rex [Linn], my boyfriend, is a huge football fan, played all sports when he was going to school,” said the woman. Okay, sing it again. That’s what he’ll say. I explained that I was fine because I believe I know the language really well at the moment.
Along with fellow Super Bowl artists Post Malone and Andra Day, the Country Music Hall of Famer attended the press conference. She expressed her comfort in knowing that the crowd will likely sing along, a moment that she takes very seriously.
“I am honored beyond words to be chosen to get to sing it,” stated McEntire. “It means that I get to sing a very special song for all Americans, people all around the world who have worked so hard for our freedom and to give us peace.”
“It’s not about me,” she said. “I’m the representation of this song, and I’m just honored to get to sing it.”
The performer, who has done a lot of work in Sin City, has expressed her pride at being a part of the city’s first Super Bowl. On Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET, CBS will air Super Bowl 58.
