Justin Roiland Facing Domestic Violence Charges: A former girlfriend of Justin Roiland, the co-creator of Rick and Morty, has accused him of domestic abuse stemming from an alleged incident that allegedly took place in 2020.
The claims are contained in the charging document, which is still secret. When Roiland showed up in court on Thursday (January 12) for a preliminary hearing, the public made information about this case available.
“Domestic battery with corporal injury and false imprisonment by threat, violence, fraud, and/or deceit” are the allegations that Roiland is facing (via BBC News).
Roiland has entered a not-guilty plea to the accusations.

According to papers NBC News obtained, the episode allegedly happened in January 2020. (via BBC News).
The complainant is still unnamed, but according to police, at the time of the alleged event, they “were dating” Roiland. In August 2020, Roiland was detained and later released on bail. He formally entered a not-guilty plea two months later.
Roiland was then instructed always to maintain a distance of 100 feet from the accuser and to surrender any firearms he might have had to law enforcement.
Roiland’s attorney reportedly informed the case court during Thursday’s pre-trial hearing that Roiland was open to accepting a plea bargain. In this case, no additional information has been given.
Roiland will be asked to appear at the upcoming hearing on April 27.
An attorney for Roiland, Edward Welbourn, claimed that the media’s reporting of this case had been “inaccurate” (via BBC News).

“To be clear, not only is Justin innocent, but we also have every expectation that this matter is on course to be dismissed once the District Attorney’s office has completed its methodical review of the evidence,” Welbourn stated.
“We look forward to clearing Justin’s name and helping him move forward as swiftly as possible.”
