Most people called Mr. Stephen J. Mooney, 71, of Island Pond, Vermont, “Moon” or “Uncle Moon,” He passed away in Newport. Locals called him “Moon.”
He was conceived in Newport on May 4, 1951, the son of Arthur Mooney and Lucille (Garner) Mooney. Son of the neighborhood representative to the Vermont State Legislature and the grandson of James T. Gardner, who was regarded as one of Newport’s founding fathers.
After finishing high school, he immediately enlisted in the US Navy and served on the USS Independence and Inchon.
Shortly after finishing his military service, he would finally meet Shirley E. Heath, his future wife. Their wedding day was set on April 23, 1976.
They uprooted their life and relocated to Maine so he could complete his education at the Southern Maine Technical Institute to become a Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator.
He would use that knowledge to maintain and repair a sizable percentage of the infrastructure over a century old in the towns where he worked.
Midway through his forties, he began seeing his health worsening. Hence, he decided to change careers and return to school, earning a bachelor’s degree in digital multimedia from CCV and then LSC, with concentrations in networking and computer science.

He was a master chess player, a captivating storyteller, and greatly appreciated the arts. His interests were football, pool, cribbage, history, literature, and off-grid life. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He liked being off the grid as well.
Being active in his community was important to him, so he spent the majority of his life as a member of the Island Pond Legion, volunteered his time to clean up the neighborhood parks and waterways, helped build playgrounds for the neighborhood school, and participated in the local ambulance squad while also assisting the team find a permanent home.
In addition, he volunteered his time with the neighborhood Boy Scout Troops and Cub Scout Packs. He did everything in his power to help others while he was in a position to.
He often used the expressions “days you don’t learn something new are days wasted,” “you learn more from losing than you do from winning,” and “days you don’t learn something new are days wasted.”
His wife Shirley, who resides in Barton, their children Scott Mooney and Cassandra in Enosburg Falls, Christopher Mooney in Newport, Amanda Ricker and her husband Jesse in Lancaster, New Hampshire, and their two granddaughters Raelyn and Seras all survive him. His nephew David Mooney and his family, and his niece Nancy Boucher and her family.
Richard, Winston, Bobby, his three half-brothers, and his mother and father died before he was born.
