After renewing the drama series Surface for a second season, Apple is sending it to London for a new chapter starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw.
The series, developed by Veronica West and executive produced by Reese Witherspoon, premiered on Netflix in July and aired through September.
Mbatha-Raw plays Sophie, a lady who has experienced a terrible brain injury that has left her with acute memory loss, which is thought to be the consequence of a suicide attempt.
Sophie was sent on a journey to investigate her own secrets in the first season, unearthing a slew of misdeeds ranging from an affair to much deeper issues about a hidden past and her true identity.
Season one starred Stephan James, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Ari Graynor, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, François Arnaud, and Millie Brady.
Season one solved who Sophie was, but season two will explain why. Sophie traveled across an ocean to flee her past, but what was she running?

Season two will see Sophie return to her homeland of London, where she will unearth the unfinished connections that have haunted her memory – as she discovers where she came from and what made her the imperfect person she was.
But the shambles she left in San Francisco will catch up with her, as Sophie realizes for the first time that you can never flee your past.
Hello, Sunshine’s showrunner is West, who also executive produces alongside Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter. Sam Miller directed four episodes, including the opener, in the first season.
Attacks were also directed by Kevin Sullivan, Jennifer Morrison, and Tucker Gates.
“I am thrilled to continue this journey and dive deeper into the tension and mystery of ‘Surface’ with this brilliant team,” said Mbatha-Raw. “I love playing Sophie and I can’t wait for fans and new audiences to join us as she enters the dangerous new world of her past in season two. As an actor and executive producer, it’s incredibly meaningful to be bringing this story home to London.”
“This is really a brand new chapter set in a whole new world – I can’t wait for people to see how the show evolves as we explore an emboldened, fearless Sophie in season two,” added West. “It’s been such a pleasure working with Gugu, Apple and the team at Hello Sunshine and a real privilege to continue the journey.”
Mbatha-Raw is represented by Anonymous Content, CAA, Curtis Brown, and Hansen, Jacobson’s Steve Warren, and Gretchen Rush.
