Doja Cat is taking on the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards with her groundbreaking red carpet fashion. Tonight, the rapper wore an Apocene dress designed by her stylist and creative director, Brett Alan Nelson, that resembles ivory cobwebs. Like spiderwebs, the white tendrils of cloth on the scant knit item draped over her body in spiral orb forms.
She was wearing nothing but a bra and briefs underneath her provocative outfit. Doja accessorized the getup with transparent pointed-toe shoes, diamond chandelier earrings, and glistening wraparound silver bracelets. She used bright white eye shadow, thinly arched eyebrows (a la the Roaring Twenties), and a crimson manicure to seem glamorous.
Doja has been nominated for five awards tonight, including Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration, Best Direction, and Best Art Direction, making him one of the evening’s most nominated artists. She is one of the acts scheduled for tonight. In an interview for the September 2023 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, the legendary singer discussed her upcoming studio album, aptly titled Scarlet.
“It’s kind of an intro to what’s to come,” she said of “Attention,” the record’s first single.
“This new album is more introspective, but I’m not leaning so hard into that to where it becomes boring. So I want to give stories and bops. It’s a nice mixture of both. I think this project is a really fun canvas for me to play with my rap skills and talk about what’s going on in my life. But I’m not abandoning who I was and what I know about pop and singing and that aspect of music.”
Her plans for the future of her ground-breaking profession were also discussed.
“There are other kinds of projects I want to branch out into. I want to make clothing, dabble in makeup. I want to explore acting,” she said. “I would love to do movies that I believe in. I would have to stop the music for a minute. But I would be down to immerse myself in acting for a certain period of time.”
