Who Is Amy Grant

Who Is Amy Grant: Amy Lee Grant is a singer, songwriter, and musician from the United States. She started with CCM before transitioning to pop music in the 1980s and 1990s. The “Queen of Christian Pop” has referred to her.

In 2009, she sold more than 30 million CDs worldwide, garnered 22 Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association, six Grammy Awards, and the first platinum-selling Christian album. For her services to the entertainment industry, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006. In 2022, it was announced that she would receive the Kennedy Center Honors.

Who Is Amy Grant?

Grant is the youngest of four sisters born in Augusta, Georgia. In 1967, her family relocated to Nashville. She is the great-granddaughter of philanthropists Lillie Burton of Nashville and A. M. Burton, who founded the Life & Casualty Insurance Company and was the name behind the Life & Casualty Tower, WLAC Radio, and WLAC-TV. Beginning with their shared membership at Nashville’s Ashwood Church of Christ, she has acknowledged the Burtons’ effect on her growth as a performer.

Who Is Amy Grant

The first song Grant ever composed, “Mountain Top,” was sung in front of an audience for the first time at Nashville’s Harpeth Hall School, an all-girls school. Together with Brown Bannister, the youth director at the church, she made a demo tape for her parents.

Chris Christian, the proprietor of the recording facility, heard Bannister duplicating a copy of the video and called Word Records. Five weeks before her 16th birthday, he played it for her over the phone and offered her a recording contract.

When Did Amy Grant Start Her Career?

Amy Grant, the first of her 12 studio albums, was recorded in 1977 with Brown Bannister serving as producer. It was released early in 1978, a month before she graduated from high school. After starting her freshman year at Furman University, she gave her first ticketed concert before the end of 1978.

Grant initially met Gary Chapman, the author of the album’s title track and future husband, during the My Father’s Eyes album release party in May 1979. Early in 1979, Grant and Chapman went on tour together. She transferred to Vanderbilt University in late 1980 and joined the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

Before leaving college to pursue a career in music, Grant released a few more albums, including Never Alone and two live albums in 1981 (In Concert and Concert Volume Two), both of which included an expanded version of the DeGarmo & Key band.

Grant also developed one of her concert characteristics during her early performances: performing barefoot. Grant still takes her shoes off during performances because, as she has explained, “it is just more comfortable.”

Age to Age, her debut album, was released in 1982. The Michael Card-penned “El Shaddai” and the Grant-Chapman-penned “In a Little While” are featured on the CD. Later, in 2001, the RIAA named “El Shaddai” one of the “Songs of the Century.”

Widening Audience

Grant adjusted her strategy to expand her fan base just as she began to establish herself as the “Queen of Christian Pop” (and hence her musical message). Her ambition was to become the first modern pop singer and a Christian singer-songwriter.

Unguarded (1985), with its distinctly pop music (and Grant’s leopard-print jacket, which he wore in four different stances for four other album covers), startled some fans. One of the few non-Christmas Christian songs to enter the Billboard Top 40 list is “Find a Way” from Unguarded, which also peaked at No. 7 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

In the mainstream

Many fans were taken aback when Heart in Motion was published in 1991 since it was so apparent that it was contemporary pop music. The limitations of the accepted definitions of ministry at the time forbade Grant’s ambition to expand her audience. The song “Baby Baby” became a powerful smash (peaking at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100), solidifying Grant’s reputation in the mainstream music industry.

The song was written for Grant’s newborn daughter Millie, whose “six-week-old face was my inspiration,” according to Grant. Grammy nominations for Record and Song of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and “Baby Baby” (although it failed to win in any of those categories).

What Is Happening In Amy Grant’s Personal Life?

Grant wed Gary Chapman, a fellow Christian singer, on June 19, 1982. Three children were born into their union. She filed for divorce from Chapman in March 1999. Grant wed country singer-songwriter Vince Gill, on March 10, 2000.

Vince Gill had previously married country singer Janis Oliver of Sweethearts of the Rodeo. Corrina Grant Gill, born on March 12, 2001, is the couple’s only child.

Grant gave the following reasons for leaving Chapman and marrying Gill in the November 1999 issue of CCM Magazine:

I didn’t get a divorce because ‘I had a great marriage and then along came Vince Gill.’ Gary and I had a rocky road from day one. I think what was so hard—and this is (what) one of our counselors said—sometimes an innocent party can come into a situation, and they’re like a big spotlight. What they do is reveal, by comparison, the painful dynamics that are already in existence.

Grant underwent open heart surgery in June 2020 to treat the congenital cardiac disease partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR). Grant was biking near Nashville’s Harpeth Hills Golf Course on July 27, 2022, when she lost control of her bicycle and fell. She was hurt and spent a short time in the hospital. She received cuts and scrapes.
