His father, Bryan Shelton, is the current Florida Gators men’s tennis coach. His mother, Lisa Witsken Shelton, was a top-ranked junior player, and his sister, Emma, played collegiate tennis at the University of Florida. Because his father coached the women’s tennis team at Georgia Tech, he was born in Atlanta. He moved to Gainesville after finishing high school at Buchholz.

Tiafoe and Shelton the First Black Men to Reach the US Open Quarterfinals
Regardless of the outcome, Tuesday’s quarterfinal match between Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton at the US Open was historic since it featured two Black men. With his 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(7), 6-2 victory, Shelton moved on to the semifinals, where he will meet Novak Djokovic, winner of 23 Grand Slam singles titles.
It was also the first match between two Black men at Arthur Ashe Stadium since 2008. There hasn’t been a male American tennis player to win the US Open in nearly two decades. When Arthur Ashe won the US Open, Australian Open, and Wimbledon singles championships, he made history as the first African-American to accomplish so. In addition, he broke barriers by being the first person of African descent to play for the United States in the Davis Cup.
