Willie Hernández, who won the American League Cy Young, MVP and a World Series trophy all in 1984 with the Tigers, died on Monday night.He was 69.
Former MLB player Hernández, who played for the Tigers, Cubs, and Phillies, has died at his home in Sebring, Florida. According to La Primera Hora, funeral services will be held in his native Puerto Rico. The reason for death is unknown.
“The Tigers are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Willie Hernández,” the team said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the Hernández family, his friends, and teammates.”
In 1984, Hernandez led Detroit to a World Series victory and won the Cy Young Award for his 1.92 ERA in 80 games pitched. He also concluded the season with 68 games completed.
The left-handed Tigers pitcher won the Cy Young award, the MVP, and the World Series in the same season in 1984 and 1986, making him one of only three players in major league history to accomplish this feat.
As a reliever in 1984, he tossed 140 2/3 innings and had a career-high 32 saves. He added 9 2/3 innings in the playoffs. In Game 5, he pitched the final two innings and won the save by retiring Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn on a fly ball to end the series.

Former Tigers teammate Alan Trammell released a statement saying, “Willie Hernández was a great teammate, and I’m terribly sorry to hear the news of his passing,” as reported by the Associated Press.
When he got the last out of the 1984 World Series, our entire team celebrated on the mound. For all time, he will be known as a World Series victor. “My thoughts and prayers are with this family.”
The southpaw saved 147 games over the course of his career, which spanned 744 games and 1,044 2/3 innings at a 3.38 ERA.
