Avatar Sequel Sets 2022 Box Office Record!
James Cameron’s films have held the world box office record for the past 25 years, and Avatar: The Way of Water may continue the trend. The first Avatar movie dethroned James Cameron‘s 1997 Titanic movie from the top spot in early 2010, and now the much-anticipated sequel has soared above $1 billion internationally in just 14 days, becoming just the sixth movie in history to exceed the record within two weeks of release, according to Variety.
Since last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which now holds the pandemic-era global box office record with $1.92 billion, the movie is the one that has reached the $1 billion mark the fastest.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the sequel has already surpassed Jurassic World Dominion as the second-biggest global release of 2022 and is on track to overtake Top Gun: Maverick as the top film. With a lifetime gross of $2.9 billion, the 2009 picture Avatar remains the highest-grossing movie in history, according to Box Office Mojo. The 2019 film Avengers: Endgame, which earned $2.8 billion, is in second position.

According to Variety, The Way of Water is anticipated to continue to do well into the following year. Still, several issues could prevent it from outperforming its predecessor at the box office. The movie won’t be released in Russia, COVID case rates are skyrocketing in China, and global box office numbers still haven’t recovered to pre-pandemic levels.
Movie To Reach $1 Billion Quickest In 2022
Avatar: The Way of Water broke the $1 billion mark 12 days after its official release, according to The LA Times, making it the fastest movie of 2022 to do so. Only two other films this year, Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World: Dominion, have reached the outstanding milestone in box office revenue.
