The life of Florence Ballard was one of triumph and tragedy, punctuated by flashes of fame and a devastating conclusion.
Florence Ballard, the founding member of the Supremes, was known by the nicknames “Flo” and “Blondie” due to her relatively light hair. Florence Ballard performed on eleven No. 1 hits with the legendary Motown three.
Florence was born on June 30, 1943, into a large, financially troubled family. When a girl named Diane, later Diana Ross, moved to their region, she and future member Mary Wilson joined a talent competition.
Wilson gushed over Ballard’s voice in the contest in her autobiography Dreamgirl. “When we walked home, we analyzed our performances down to the smallest detail,” she said.
We decided the other would be contacted first if we were asked to join a singing group.
Before finally parting ways, we waited outside of my building for what seemed like an eternity. We shared a unique bond as a group. We didn’t anticipate it to go on for this long. Details on Florence Ballard’s cause of death and related information are presented here.
