From 1987 until 1995, Arthur Ravenel Jr. served as the U.S. Representative for South Carolina’s first congressional district. He moved back to Columbia in 1997, and from then until 2003, he served as a state senator.

The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, which connects Mount Pleasant and the broader Charleston region and bears his name, may have been one of his most notable accomplishments. In a 2015 interview with News 2, Ravenel claimed that he mainly returned to the South Carolina Senate in 1997 to “find the money for the bridge.”
