Scott launched his namesake label in the late 1990s after failing to find work as a fresh college graduate in Paris. Scott made his Paris Fashion Week debut in 1997 with a collection of gowns resembling garbage bags, a subject he would return to throughout his career.
His daring designs soon drew the attention of several prominent fashion professionals, including stylist and former Vogue US fashion director Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele and Björk, who wore a dress from Scott’s third collection on her Homogenic tour.
Scott and Adidas formed a long-standing connection in the mid-2000s, catapulting the designer to the mainstream thanks to a pair of particularly omnipresent winged sneakers.
Then there was Moschino: Scott succeeded Rossella Jardini as creative director in October 2013, a perfect union that gave both parties a propensity for outrageous fashion.
Celebrities such as Madonna, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Nicki Minaj have embraced Scott’s Moschino designs, wearing them on the red carpet and in music videos.
He dressed a slew of A-listers at last year’s Met Gala, including Megan Thee Stallion, MJ Rodriguez, Simone Ashley, Ariana De Bose, Iris Law, and Vanessa Hudgens. Scott most recently dressed Angela Bassett for the 2023 Academy Awards.
As for Scott’s next move? On Instagram, the designer wrote that he “can’t wait to share with you all what I have in store for you next” — not a definitive answer, but confirmation that he hasn’t precisely retired from fashion.
In February, Vogue Business reported that Scott’s eponymous label is paused. With 10 years at Moschino, the designer may be looking to reboot his brand.
