Both Scotland High School and Yankton College were on her academic itinerary. To advance her profession in television journalism, Joan uprooted and moved to Sioux Falls. She started as a reporter at KSFY TV, and today she anchors the 6 PM and 10 PM Eyewitness newscasts every weeknight. In her latter professional years, she found work at KELO, KDLT, and SDPB.

Joan set a strong precedent for women journalists in Sioux Falls and throughout South Dakota. She worked hard and proved herself reliable as a journalist throughout her tenure at each network. She accomplished all of this while raising her son alone and subsequently her two daughters as a stay-at-home mum.

She supported her children in all of their endeavours. Joan had an unteachable, natural sense of confidence to go along with her passion for music and commitment to her rural background. In her personal and professional life, Joan was a tireless researcher, reader, learner, and editor.

She revised the sentiments in her birthday cards to friends and family and even edited her kids’ SMS messages to make them more grammatically accurate. She was witty, articulate, kind, and a smart thinker. All of her friends and family will miss her much.
