The Smiths have made it clear that theirs is not a typical union. They tied the knot in 1997, but Pinkett Smith has disclosed this week that she and her husband Smith have been leading “completely separate lives” since 2016.

Garden of Love
In 2017, on the occasion of their 20th wedding anniversary, Will Smith posted a photo of the couple’s wedding with a touching comment reading, “20 Years Ago Today we held hands and went blindly down the aisle.” I’ll share what I’ve learnt in the meanwhile.
“A Gardener’s View of Love” Smith added, “I have learnt to concentrate on assisting you in BLOSSOMSING into what YOU wish to be (into what you were intended to be). And not “Rather than Demanding that you become what my Fragile Ego needs you to be.”
At the end of the message he wished his queen, “Happy Anniversary!” I will always be devoted to caring for your innermost truth.
“Incredible Chemistry”
Pinkett Smith addressed the “craziest” story she had heard about her family during an appearance on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen” the same year. Pinkett Smith has revealed the secret to her and Will Smith’s success: they’re swingers.
“And I’m all, ‘Yo, I wish!'” With a guffaw, she said. Pinkett Smith responded to Cohen’s question on how she and her husband keep things “hot” by saying, “I really think that Will and I just have amazing chemistry on a lot of different levels.”
“We love to laugh together, we love to learn together, and we just love each other,” she went on to say. Simply said, we enjoy one other’s company. it’s it, then; it must be the key. Oh, we simply click so well together!
Forever Family
In 2018, Pinkett Smith stated that she and Smith “are family,” despite their differences, on Sway’s Universe. Don’t worry about all that marriage and relationship nonsense; Will and I are already a family. \
She said, “I don’t care, I’m holding him down.” That whole husband, partner, and all that stuff that other people have in their heads, whatever. A man who can put his trust in me like that does not need anybody else for the rest of his life.
Later, a caller inquired as to how Pinkett Smith handled “indiscretions” inside her union. “As much as we wish our partners could be perfect, as much as we wish that they never hurt us, as much as we wish that they entered relationships with no flaws and had everything figured out, we don’t,” Pinkett Smith said.
A Bond that Transcends Marriage
Smith also made news in the same year when he admitted to the host of Tidal’s Rap Radar podcast that he and Pinkett Smith “don’t even say we’re married anymore.” “We refer to ourselves as life partners,” Smith added, describing the moment when two people understand they will spend the rest of their lives together.
There are no major sticking points. There’s no way she could change anything, ever. Nothing […] could ever come between us. It is great to finally be at a place where I can say, “I will support her till the end of time.”
Marriage not Working
Smith gave an interview to GQ in 2021 to discuss his upcoming memoir, in which he details the highs and lows of his marriage. In 2011, during Pinkett Smith’s 40th birthday party, he screened a documentary he had made on her life, which revealed that her ancestry includes slaves.
The actress was not pleased and said to Smith, “That was the most disgusting display of ego I have ever seen.” We were having marital problems, Smith said in his memoir. We were out of excuses. Neither of us was happy, so obviously something had to change.
Since “Jada never believed in conventional marriage,” he told GQ, “we ended up having a non-monogamous marriage.” She had a totally different upbringing than mine. The question of what constitutes relational perfection was the subject of extensive debate.
How would you describe the ideal couple’s dynamic? he asked. And for the most portion of our relationship, monogamy is what we opted for, without viewing it as the sole ideal in relationships. Smith elaborated on the significance of this for them.
Since we all have to make our own path in life, we have each given the other the benefit of the doubt and the latitude to do so. We can’t let our marriages become shackles. No one should go down the path we took.
I would never advise taking this path. What I mean by love, though, is best exemplified by the liberties we’ve granted each other and the unwavering support we’ve shown one another.
‘Bad Marriage for Life’
In 2020, The Smiths appeared on her “Red Table Talk” to talk about her romance with musician August Alsina. It was revealed that the “entanglement” occurred at “a very difficult time” in the couple’s marriage, but that they had now moved past that difficult period and found “unconditional love.”
While we were still newlyweds, Will Smith reassured Jada Pinkett Smith that he would love her no matter what. We ride together, we die together,” the couple joked as they shook hands and recited his catchphrase from the “Bad Boys” movies. Permanently unhappy marriage.
