Death of a University of Memphis Student: According to Memphis Police, a 22-year-old male has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death and disappearance of a University of Memphis nursing student who went missing last month just before graduation.
According to MPD, Vincent Patterson is also accused of tampering with evidence, aggravated robbery, and one count of first-degree murder concerning the death of 25-year-old Barshay Wilson.
After Wilson left a friend’s house on December 9 near an apartment building and wasn’t heard from again, authorities reported him missing. On December 11, Wilson received a City Watch notice from MPD identifying him as an “endangered missing adult.”

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office was responding to a complaint about a burning car, according to a police affidavit. About an hour and a half after Wilson was last spotted, there was a reaction.
The 2015 Chevrolet Camaro, which was the vehicle, was transported to an MPD impound lot. In the car was Wilson’s Tennessee driver’s license.
MPD investigators returned to the location on December 12, two days later.
The affidavit stated that Barshay Wilson was located around 75 yards from where the Camaro was when MPD investigators went back to the scene two (2) days later. “Barshay Wilson was found dead at the site with several gunshot wounds.”
According to MPD, Wilson was discovered Monday afternoon on Highway 70 in Arlington close to a wastewater treatment facility.
Throughout the inquiry, Patterson came under the attention of the police, and after his home was searched, he was taken into custody.
According to Patterson, he and the owner of the Camaro, who as of Friday morning had not been charged or detained, shot Wilson before “taking his marijuana and setting fire to the Camaro after discarding Barshay Wilson’s body nearby.”
Wilson, a football defensive player at Whitehaven High School, graduated from there in 2016.
That same year, he enrolled at Middle Tennessee State University to start his college career. According to his Facebook, Wilson was a nursing student at MTSU before transferring to the University of Memphis.
Wilson was scheduled to receive his degree in health sciences from the University of Memphis on December 11, per the commencement program.
Patterson, who was detained on Thursday and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, does not have a bond.
