Simmons started his career with the LSU Tigers on a four-stop national tour of Australia as a college freshman. On August 15, in the first game of LSU’s preseason tour of Australia, Simmons made his collegiate basketball debut for the Tigers in an 89-75 victory over the Newcastle All-Stars. This gave Simmons a chance to play basketball in his native country.
At the Newcastle Basketball Stadium, where his father played professionally for the Newcastle Falcons in the late 1990s, his double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds helped the Tigers to victory.
