Beyoncé recently gave an exclusive interview in which she discussed her hair journey and how it has been an important reflection of her life up to this point.
Introducing her upcoming haircare product, Cécred, which will be available starting February 20, Beyoncé discussed it in an Essence piece that featured a full set of images with her mother Tina Knowles, two daughters Rumi and Blue Ivy, and herself.
The majority of the conversation delves into Beyoncé’s hair history, which begins in her childhood when she helped out at her mom’s salon. The artist reflected on her salon visits, saying, “more than just a hair appointment—it was therapy.”
“I worked in her salon, sweeping the floors and helping out where I could,” Beyoncé said. “I used to eavesdrop and listen in on their conversations intently. It was a sacred space for these women.”
Regarding her own hairstyle, the interviewer inquired about the day in 2013 when Beyoncé fearlessly shaved off her very long blonde locks into a pixie cut, following the birth of her daughter Blue Ivy the previous year.
Reminiscing about that period, Beyoncé expressed her admiration for “how we associate a certain hairstyle with moments in our lives, like that short-hair moment.”
“I remember the day I decided to just cut all my hair off,” she said. “I didn’t have a particular style in mind. It wasn’t an aesthetic choice, but it was a very big emotional transformation and metamorphosis that I was going through.”
Beyoncé continued: “So much of my identity as a performer has been connected to flowing hair. Cutting my hair off was me rebelling against being this woman that society thinks I’m supposed to be.
I was a new mother, and something about the liberation of becoming a mother made me want to just shed all of that. It was a physical representation of me shedding the expectations put upon me. I just wanted it off.”
Not only did Beyoncé’s decision signal a shift in her style, but she also says it was the moment she became “super brave.” “It was the first step to many more audacious decisions I made in my life and my career that have led to who I am now,” she said.
For many years, Beyoncé has worn her long honey-blonde hair as a distinctive style. It has seen several styles from Beyoncé over the years, but for the promotion of Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, she dyed it a cool bleach blonde.
Photos for her upcoming country album, Act II, show that she’s still killing it with her hair. “I have many beautiful memories attached to my hair,” Beyoncé continued. “The relationship we have with our hair is such a deeply personal journey.”
