On February 22, 2024, in New York City -On Wednesday, an auction in New York raised over $8 million from the sale of Elton John’s personal effects, including nearly $100,000 in silver boots with the musician’s monogram and approximately $2 million in a triptych by graffiti artist Banksy.
An ivory and gold glam rock outfit from the early 1970s, created by Annie Reavey, which went for $12,600, is among the 76-year-old’s possessions that are being sold off in a series of eight online and in-person auctions by Christie’s until February 28.
Passionate fans placed bids that sent John’s grand piano soaring over $200,000 and a pair of sunglasses—an essential part of the singer’s style—to $22,680—ten times the initial estimate.
The majority of the objects are from the artist’s recently sold mansion in Atlanta, Georgia, which he used as a home base during his American tours.
Last year, the famed musician’s farewell tour came to a close. He was famous for his classics like “Your Song,” “Rocket Man,” and “Sacrifice,” as well as his extravagant costumes and dedication to the battle against HIV/AIDS.
The Atlanta mansion was purchased by John not long after he achieved sobriety in 1990, according to Christie, since the singer found “solace and support in the warm community and recovery facilities” there.
His collection, which he co-founded with David Furnish, showcases the couple’s appreciation for modern and contemporary art including pieces by Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Richard Avedon.
A common sight at the most prestigious auction houses throughout the globe is the private collections of famous people. The late Freddie Mercury’s personal belongings from Queen fetched 40 million pounds ($50.4 million) at an auction in September, according to Sotheby’s.
