Even though Bill Hader is a comedian, he takes his personal life seriously. Before finally divorcing in 2017, the “Barry” star was married for 11 years to filmmaker Maggie Carey. Hader previously spoke to Variety about how his work has impacted his family life, even though he has now started dating again.
“When I was on ‘SNL,’ I was a bit of a basket case,” he explained of his time on the late-night comedy sketch show. “It could not have been easy on my wife at the time. I was so consumed with work and anxiety.” Of welcoming their two eldest daughters, Hannah and Harper, Hader added, “Once our second child was born, I had to leave ‘SNL.’ It was hard with one kid, let alone two. Because I was just never around.”
Late in 2019, when he was linked to his “The To Do List” co-star Rachel Bilson, Hader’s love life grabbed news again. Even though he wasn’t always outspoken about the celebrities he dated, he continued to draw notice as he was linked to more A-listers in the following years.
Hader revealed to The Hollywood Reporter in March 2023 that he doesn’t talk about his romances in public out of respect for his kids. “They just want me to be their dad,” he explained. “They just want me to sit and watch ‘Encanto’ over and over and over again. So that’s what I do.”
Maggie Carey
According to People, Hader and Carey were wed from 2006 to 2018. Hannah, Harper, and Hayley are three of the couple’s daughters. Hader broke down in tears while discussing co-parenting with Carey in an interview with Variety in January 2019.
“I think I saw my kids a total of five days all summer,” he shared. “It was terrible. So I’m going, ‘Next summer I’m taking off. And I’m going to spend every day with them.’ It’s this weird thing where when you’re in this industry, you don’t have time to be with them, and it’s really, really difficult. I’m getting emotional right now talking about it.”
Rachel Bilson
Bill Hader and Rachel Bilson co-starred in the 2013 rom-com “The To Do List,” directed by the comedian’s ex-wife years before they started dating. Six years later, though, their friendship appeared to change to a sexual relationship as they were photographed together in Los Angeles in November 2019, according to Us Weekly.
The following month, a journey to Hader’s hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, seemed to solidify their relationship. At the 2020 Golden Globes, Bilson and Hader debuted red carpet as a couple. However, they called it quits in July of that same year.
Anna Kendrick
Hader continued to date Anna Kendrick after his breakup with Bilson. They both appeared in the 2019 Disney movie “Noelle” together. Hader and Kendrick were said to have started dating in January 2022, and a source told the people that they “got together well after” their film. “They are both very private people, and with the pandemic it was easy to keep it quiet,” the source added. “They’re both hysterical so they must keep each other laughing all of the time. She’s really, really happy.”
Even though a source had told Entertainment Tonight months earlier that Hader and Kendrick were “in love and very happy in their relationship,” ET claimed in June 2022 that they had broken up.
Ali Wong
The Hollywood Reporter highlighted in a March 2023 piece on Wong that “she was briefly linked to Bill Hader late last year,” even though little is known about their brief romance.
In December 2022, an insider told Page Six that Hader and Wong were “no longer dating.” “They dated very briefly,” the insider added. “They’re just super busy with things, but [the split] was certainly amicable. They’re certainly friends.”
According to a second source who spoke to Page Six, they remained discreet, partly because of Wong’s recent split from Justin Hakuta. “Only a small circle of A-list comedians know and everyone was thrilled about it. [Their friends] helped them protect the relationship in light of Ali’s divorce,” the source shared.
