Brad Jones Obituary: On Sunday, May 25, 2014, Brad Jones, 83, of Grinnell, passed away at St. Francis Manor.
His life will be honored on Saturday, May 31, at 10:30 a.m. at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. The visitation period will start at 9:30 a.m. before the service. At Gilman’s Prairie View Cemetery, there will be a burial.
If desired, memorials may be sent to the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112, in the care of the St. Francis Manor Nursing Scholarship Fund or the Wounded Warrior Project.
Arlo and Mildred (Strand) Jones welcomed Clair Bradford Jones into the world on March 28, 1931, in Grinnell. He grew up on the family farm in Grinnell and Newburg, where he also worked. In 1948, he earned his high school diploma from Grinnell.
Together with seven of his pals, he enrolled in the United States Navy in 1950. Before joining the Navy, he attended boot camp and underwent carpentry training in San Diego. He served tours of duty in the Philippines, Kwajalein, Alaska, and Adak. He was able to travel, going to places like Baguio and Hong Kong.
1954 saw Brad’s return to Grinnell following his service in the Navy. In Grinnell, Iowa, on September 11, 1955, he married Ruth Russell. On his property in Newburg, he began his farming profession and reared his family.
He belonged to both the American Legion and the Iowa Soybean Association. Throughout his 25-year farming career, he made significant improvements to the family farm before moving to Grinnell in 1982, then to Seeland Park in 2005. Susie and Rachael, his dogs, loved going for long walks and driving in the truck with him.
His wife Ruth of Grinnell, his children Scott Jones of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Michele (Scott) McLeod of Cedar Rapids, and their two grandkids, Brianne Goodin and Katie Strawn survive him.
