Carl Ruiz Cause of Death: How did the Ragular Food Network Guest Die?

In September, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease claimed the life of restaurateur and regular Food Network guest Carl Ruiz. This disease develops when fats, cholesterol, and other substances build up and harden in the arteries, restricting blood flow; on Wednesday, Bruce Goldfarb, assistant to the chief medical examiner of the Maryland Department of Health, confirmed to TODAY that the celebrity chef died in his sleep last month from this disease.

Ruiz, a native New Yorker who was visiting friends in Maryland, suddenly away while there. At the time of his death, Ruiz had appeared as a judge on many Food Network cooking competition shows, including Guy Fieri’s “Guy’s Grocery Games” and “Guy’s Ranch Kitchen.

When Guy Fieri visited his New Jersey deli, Marie’s Italian Specialties, in 2013, he received his first big break in front of the camera. He also ran the successful New York eatery La Cubana and the widely-viewed YouTube channel “Omg Carl’s Food Show.”

After hearing of Ruiz’s demise last month, several Food Network stars, including Fieri, flocked to Twitter to pay their respects. Chef Carl Ruiz was a dear friend of Guy Fieri’s, and his passing left Fieri devastated. I can’t even begin to put into words how much of a wonderful friend he was to me and my loved ones.

He was a fantastic cook, but what really set him apart was his uncanny ability to make me laugh and grin no matter what was going on. Fieri elaborated on their friendship in a subsequent tweet, writing, “Over the years, I’ve met a lot of great people, but a friend like Carl is one in a hundred million.” Carl “The Cuban” Ruiz will be remembered by his friends, family, and fans always.

New York restaurant entrepreneur and “Chopped” judge Alex Guarnaschelli praised Ruiz, saying, “This man was somehow fatherly, comforting, wise, reckless, brilliant, wickedly funny, and unique all in 1.” Without him, I fear that I will become more alone. In June, Ruiz established a Cuban restaurant called La Cubana. The eatery announced its plans to create the Carl Ruiz Scholarship Foundation on Instagram, with the goal of providing financial assistance to future cooks.
