Dwayne Johnson Movies List: One of the last true cinema stars is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The Rock can improve nearly all films simply by appearing in them, whether he is kicking butt, tickling funny bones, or (often) both. These movies are ranked according to how good they are and how much Dwayne Johnson is in them. Cameos typically aren’t considered significant enough to be listed, and supporting roles are ranked much below.
Jem and the Holograms, 2015
Johnson should not be held accountable for Jem and the Holograms in any significant way. He’s so divorced from the movie’s premise that it seems out of place even to bring it up while discussing his other works. Johnson makes a cameo appearance. However, it’s important to note that the clip he appears in praising the titular band is a recycled Vine praising Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood.” It’s a cheap way to cash in on Johnson’s fame through what amounts to a walk-on role.
Longshot, directed by Lionel C. Martin, is an action comedy that only meets the technical requirements to be called a film because it is a throwback to the late 1990s and early 2000s. When you consider that Johnson plays a mugger for less than a minute before Joey Sculthorpe fights him off, you realize that the film’s terrible quality has little to do with Johnson. Fortunately, it will take more than a single lousy film to prevent The Rock from becoming the world’s most prominent movie star.
Tooth Fairy, 2010
Every one of the great action stars has been in a cheesy family film. This is like some sort of strange initiation ceremony. The Kindergarten Cop is Arnold Schwarzenegger’s movie. The Kid belongs to Bruce Willis. For example, Vin Diesel has a pacifier. In Tooth Fairy, Johnson portrays a hockey thug infamous for, get this, knocking out the teeth of opposition players on the rink.
In the off-season, he’s just as much of a jerk as he is on it, so much so that the tooth fairy race transforms him into a toothy fairy to make him a better person. He’s an awful human being. He takes a dollar from his girlfriend’s daughter and lies to her about tooth fairies. Consider this the price you must pay on your path to superhero status.
Why Did I Get Married Too? 2010
Here we have another film in which Johnson doesn’t do anything until the end when he appears at the climax to thank Patricia Agnew (Janet Jackson) for helping him through his divorce through her books. He expressed his appreciation and invited her out for coffee. Besides The Rock, the movie is a typical romantic drama about married people striving to improve their relationships.
The Mummy Returns, 2001
There is some argument as to whether Johnson’s role in The Mummy Returns constitutes “acting,” but whichever side you land on, this is hardly anyone’s notion of a promising debut; his significant moment depends on CGI so terrible it’s almost awe-inspiring, old even by 2001 standards, and even more so now.
To create this man-scorpion, all Stephen Sommers did was glue Johnson’s face onto a scorpion’s body. Even though he makes a shirtless cameo early in the film, his abrupt exit makes the whole affair moot.
Empire State, 2013
This is yet another film starring Johnson in which he has a minor role. There are certainly worse films here, but few are as egregiously generic as Empire State, and even fewer give him so little to work with.
The film is constructed entirely from clichés that filmmaker Dito Montiel uses without showing any originality: Two buddies with no history of armed robbery come up with a plot to rob an armored truck company, and Johnson, portraying a stereotypical no-nonsense investigator, goes after them. Empire State opts for mediocrity rather than embracing its awfulness. You can find it. Well, that’s all there is to it. And Johnson is barely a blip on the radar.
Baywatch, 2017
Even while it was entertaining to watch Johnson embarrass Zac Efron, Baywatch suffers from the same laziness that plagued the rest of the show. Seth Gordon isn’t Phil Lord or Christopher Miller, so he doesn’t have their talent for making poor ideas work in fantastic movies, and the picture is an apparent attempt to cash in on the success of their 21 Jump Street reboots. Johnson’s disagreements with the film’s reviewers following its release were made clear; he is a “stand behind the work” type of guy.
Planet 51, 2009
Planet 51 makes a similar mistake to Empire State by being too conventional. The former is superior because Johnson, who voices the protagonist, is there for the film’s entirety. For this phase of Johnson’s career as a leading man, that’s about as low as it gets.
Although the plot of Planet 51 is very standard, it is nonetheless enjoyable. The film stars Dwayne Johnson as a meathead astronaut who discovers an alien civilization similar to 1950s America. You’ve seen similar movies with better-developed characters and more profound ideas.
The Game Plan, 2007
Tooth Fairy: “Family-friendly movies starring wrestlers can’t be good!” Hold my beer, The Game Plan says. Indeed, The Game Plan won’t change your thinking about what constitutes excellent filmmaking, but that’s because a) it isn’t attempting to, b) very few films succeed in doing so, and c) most significantly, it’s enjoyable to watch, making it stand out from the crowd.
The Game Plan is pretty damn saccharine, but Johnson handles the picture, releasing the film three years before the tragedy that is Tooth Fairy, which only makes the latter film look worse by contrast.
Race to Witch Mountain, 2009
The cinematic equivalent of cotton candy: light, sweet, and entertaining, but quickly forgotten when the lights go off. Race to Witch Mountain, a fun fantasy picture that is a remake (in all except name) of 1975 original, is a fantastic time.
It’s about a former mob getaway driver named Johnson who is caught in the center of an alien invasion scheme involving two extraterrestrial teenagers, an unknown assassin, and a government spook.
Johnson must work with the teenagers to stop their race from conquering Earth and taking over the world. This is something that sounds like a lot of fun. Yes, indeed!
