After nearly 18 years of marriage, Kenya Duke, the wife of comedian and actor Gary Owen, filed for divorce, according to news reports last year. She accused him of cheating once the news got out, and now Gary is explaining his side of the story.
Gary revealed that, rather than the other way around, he was the one who left Kenya during an appearance on “The Breakfast Club.” He said that although she filed for divorce after him, he had initially filed.
“I left, I filed first, I made the phone call saying I don’t want to be married. When everything came out, I just stayed quiet, but this whole narrative was ‘I got caught out there, she left me.’ That’s not what happened,” he said.
Gary Owen Shares Why He Filed For Divorce After 23-Year Relationship
He explained that despite accusations that he was unfaithful, he filed for divorce mainly because he was miserable.
“No good marriage ended because of cheating,” Gary said.
Gary stated that they made several attempts to make it work over the years. They had been together for 23 years, and he had occasionally departed, but no one had ever known. He claims that he was only sad the last time, though.
“You can get in all kinds of reasons but at the end of the day—you’re not happy. Then you sit here and stay in it for the kids […] and you’re like ‘man, I’m miserable.’ And it’s weird because you feel selfish for choosing your own happiness.”
Gary states in the interview that Kenya’s comments about his being a ‘deadbeat parent’ to their kids are untrue.
He said, “I was there, I was present. I like being a dad, there was a time my kids never rode the bus. If I’m home, I’m taking them to school, picking them up, and if not, she’s doing it. I didn’t miss nothing, I didn’t miss a birthday.”
Gary said that he couldn’t be a slack parent since their children were now adults. He admits that he hasn’t spoken to their kids in about a year and a half because he split up with their mother.

Kenya seemingly responded to the interview with a few gym selfies and said, “I woke up to a lot of triggering noise this morning some which I had an reaction too, but my trainer said, ‘I don’t care, see you in an hour’ Thank you. I needed that workout. But I am still disappointed and pissed.”
