Kevin Spacey claimed that his father’s racism, homophobia, and antisemitism made it difficult for him to appear gay in public.
Thomas Fowler, the father of Spacey’s character, was described as “my father” by Spacey. “I have never openly discussed these issues.” I grew up in a complex family dynamic, he said.
The revelation was made on the witness stand in New York City on Monday during a legal dispute involving $40 million between Anthony Rapp and Spacey. Rapp claims that in 1986, when he was 14 years old, Spacey made inappropriate sexual attempts toward him. In his testimony, Rapp called Spacey a phony for not being out as gay.
“To claim someone is living a falsehood is to brand them a fraud,” Spacey remarked. I wasn’t deceiving myself. Simply put, I was hesitant to discuss my personal life.
Spacey recalled that his family regularly moved due to his father’s repeated unemployment while he was growing up. He claimed that growing up. He was “terrified” and “had to listen” to his father’s racist and xenophobic speeches, which kept him from inviting friends around. Don’t be an f-word. His father reportedly urged him when he informed him he wanted to be an actor.
Spacey said, “I won’t say it here because it’s disparaging. “I felt some shame.”
He claimed that his passion for making his mother, Kathleen, laugh and the love of movies she instilled in him led to his decision to pursue a career in show business.
In addition to starring in the Netflix series “House of Cards” and receiving Oscar nominations for his roles in “The Usual Suspects” and “American Beauty,” Spacey was one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actors. But after Rapp and additional victims came out with similar claims against Spacey in a 2017 BuzzFeed article, the actor’s career collapsed. In his testimony, Spacey took the jury through his early attempts to get into the acting industry, including his work in regional theatre and his first taste of success as a member of a Jack Lemmon-directed production of “Long Day’s Journey Into Night.”
During that time, Spacey admitted, “I was broke.” “I had no prospects.”
Before the actor ever entered the stand, Spacey’s defense team achieved a significant triumph. Spacey now faces violence charges after Judge Lewis A. Kaplan dismissed emotional distress allegations against him. Kaplan stated, “I’m not looking to duplicate damages.
