A dad from West Virginia who was found guilty of killing his infant daughter was given a sentence.
According to the Jackson County Magistrate, Jeffrey Hoskins, 29, of Ripley, was sentenced on Monday to 15 years to life in prison for the death of a child caused by child abuse, one year for unintentional manslaughter, and one to five years for strangling. According to officials, the sentences will run concurrently, and he will be given credit for 1,287 days served.
Last year, a jury found Hoskins guilty of the girl’s homicide. Authorities have stated that he was charged with choking his daughter Riana, who was 6 months old at the time, in October 2018. Officials noted that the girl was deaf and blind due to her injuries and was kept alive in a medically induced coma. After the daughter passed away in January 2020, more than a year after she was admitted to the hospital with her injuries, he was charged.
First-degree murder charges were brought by the prosecution, while defense attorney Mark Plants contended Hoskins was only guilty of involuntary manslaughter.
