Jewel Kilcher came into this world in Payson, Utah, on May 23, 1974. Born in Anchorage, Alaska to Mormon parents Lenedra and Attila (sometimes known as Atz Kilcher), she had an older brother named Shane and a younger brother named Atz Jr. However, following Lenedra and Atz’s 1981 divorce, the family departed from their faith.
The son of Atz’s previous relationship, Jewel’s half-brother Niko, is also in the family. Following the divorce, Jewel was brought up by Atz in Homer, Alaska, in a house that lacked indoor plumbing. Occasionally, she would join her father—who had taught her yodeling—onstage at local pubs and hotels in Anchorage.
