Jimmy Buffett passed away at the age of 76 on September 1, 2023. The statement sent by his family read, “He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”
Fans of the “Margaritaville” singer (affectionately called “Parrotheads”) may have remembered that he had to abruptly cancel a performance in South Carolina in May 2023 due to an undisclosed medical condition, which came as a shock to many.
In addition, health problems prevented Buffett from performing throughout much of 2022. Jimmy Buffett’s death has since been attributed to a drug overdose.
What was Jimmy Buffett’s Cause of Death?
Cancer was the reason for Jimmy Buffett’s death, TMZ reports. The musician reportedly began treatment for skin cancer four years ago, but the cancer spread and eventually became lymphoma.
Someone close to Buffett said, “He lived his life in the sun, literally and figuratively,” and revealed that he had been on hospice in the days before his death.
Although Jimmy Buffet’s family hasn’t confirmed the cause of his death, he recently told fans that he’d been sick and had to postpone and reschedule a number of shows.
He told his supporters on X (then Twitter) in May 2023 that he had checked himself into the hospital to “address some issues that needed immediate attention,” which was nearly four months before his death.

The star of “Trip Around the Sun” had to postpone a concert in Boston, Massachusetts that had been planned for the time.
“Growing old is not for sissies, I promise you,” he said in his statement at the time.
“I also will promise you, that when I am well enough to perform, that is what I’ll be doing in the land of She-Crab soup. You all make my life more meaningful and fulfilled than I would have ever imagined as a [tow] headed little boy sitting on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico.”
The 2022 tour dates of the “Bama Breeze” singer were postponed because of medical issues.
“On doctor’s orders, he must take time to recuperate and heal. Jimmy looks forward to getting back on stage next year.”
