Today, January 31, the famous 19 Kids and Counting actress Jinger Duggar Vuolo published her new book, Becoming Free Indeed: My Story of Disentangling Faith from Fear. She discusses her elder brother Josh Duggar.
In addition to detailing Vuolo’s experiences on reality TV and her battles with anxiety, the memoir focuses on her background in a fundamentalist Christian family. She also avoids openly referencing Josh most of the time, but in one section of the book, she does discuss his “sin.”
In one excerpt, Vuolo stated, “In the case of my brother Josh, the collapse has been much more terrible because he claimed to be a man of Christian conviction” (via Us Weekly). “The criticism of his acts has been harsh, as it should be. His actions would still land him in jail even if he weren’t well-known. But Josh’s immorality brings a negative reputation to Christ because so many people know him.

Josh was accused of sexual abuse in a police report from 2006, which was made public by In Touch Weekly magazine on May 21, 2015. Six years after the reality program was canceled, on April 29, 2021, Josh was detained and found guilty of possessing child pornography.
In a different chapter, Vuolo compared her brother and Bill Gothard, the fundamentalist minister who served as a model for the Duggar children.
“He used his platform, and even his job at the Family Research Council, to promote some of the same ideas Gothard taught. But while he looked the part in so many ways, the true Josh appears to be much different. He was living a lie,” she stated. She also revealed that he “hasn’t spoken to Josh in two years,” but she continues to “pray for him.”
