“John Wick: Chapter 4” was another box office success for Keanu Reeves.
According to studio estimations, the neo-noir thriller brought in $73.5 million, setting a new record for the hitman story.
In addition to its local box office success, the movie earned $64 million abroad, bringing its total worldwide earnings to $137.5 million.
On its 2014 debut, “John Wick” brought in $14 million throughout the first weekend. Each subsequent “Wick” movie has consistently outperformed during its opening weekend.
While the third film, “Parabellum,” began with $56.8 million, “John Wick: Chapter 2” brought in $30.4 million in 2017.
“When you make a fourth in an action franchise, you have to expect it to go down. That is the nature of these franchises,” said Joe Drake, chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “But we kept seeing signals and it was wonderful to see the movie they delivered. We saw the audience wanting more.”
A couple of spinoffs of the Chad Stahelski-directed series are also in development.
Ana de Armas filmed “Ballerina” and “The Matrix,” by actress, and Mel Gibson and Peacock are currently developing the miniseries “The Continental.”
“Chad and Keanu have created this world and that world continues to expand. I don’t know what all the edges of that world are, still,” Drake said. “As best they can, they’ll continue to try to seduce Keanu to come back and do things. He gets beat up in these shows. He really does. And at the end he’s like, ‘I’m not doing it anymore.’ Then you watch him sit in the theater and feel that audience.”
“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” came in second place at the box office with $9.7 million, followed by “Scream VI” at $8.4 million. “Avatar: The Way of Water” still earned $1.4 million in the 10th position.
In “Chapter 4”, besides Keanu, other actors include Laurence Fishburne, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgrd, Ian McShane, Shamier Anderson, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Lance Reddick, who plays one of his final roles.
On March 17, Reddick passed away “suddenly” from natural causes. He was 60.
An Instagram from thereallancereddick’s official account remarked, “Lance was taken from us far too soon. Thank you for all your overwhelming love, support and beautiful stories shared on these platforms over the last day. I see your messages and can’t begin to express how grateful I am to have them.
And to the thousands of Destiny players who played in special tribute to Lance, thank you. Lance loved you as much as he loved the game.

On the popular HBO series “The Wire,” Reddick is known for playing the straight-laced Baltimore police lieutenant Cedric Daniels.
Daniels battled corruption in the police while serving as the chief of the narcotics division. The actor portrayed the multitalented Continental Hotel concierge Charon in all of the “John Wick” franchise movies.
Reeves and Stahelski issued a joint statement via Deadline upon his passing.
“We are deeply saddened and heartbroken at the loss of our beloved friend and colleague Lance Reddick,” they wrote.
“He was the consummate professional and a joy to work with. Our love and prayers are with his wife Stephanie, his children, family and friends. We dedicate the film to his loving memory. We will miss him dearly.”
Lionsgate released the studio’s statement.
“The world of Wick would not be what it is without Lance Reddick and the unparalleled depth he brought to Charon’s humanity and unflappable charisma,” the studio said. “Lance leaves behind an indelible legacy and hugely impressive body of work, but we will remember him as our lovely, joyful friend and concierge. We’re stunned and heartbroken, and our deepest condolences go to his beloved family and his fans all around the world.”
