He had 66 receptions for 1,362 yards and nine touchdowns in 1994. He had 102 receptions for 1,434 yards and seven touchdowns in 1995. During his time at USC, he was named to the consensus first team of the Americas on two separate occasions. Johnson was voted the Cotton Bowl Classic’s Most Valuable Player in 1995 after leading the Trojans to victory in the game following the conclusion of the 1994 college season.
During the 1996 Rose Bowl, Johnson caught 12 passes for 216 yards and a touchdown in the Trojans’ 41–32 win over Northwestern. He was given the honour of being named the Game’s Most Valuable Player. On December 31, 2008, he was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame. Johnson made an appearance in the TV show Coach as a player who would be available for selection in the upcoming NFL draught while still in college.

For the sake of his long-time coach Hayden Fox, he turned down the opportunity to join the fictional “Orlando Breakers” squad, saying he preferred to play in Canada first. In 1997, Johnson received a bachelor’s degree in social sciences and history from the University of Southern California.
