Republican Kevin McCarthy could not garner enough votes on Tuesday to become the next speaker, and the newly elected House GOP majority is now embroiled in a chaotic, once-in-a-century battle to choose his replacement. Republicans are currently attempting to find a way ahead as the House has been suspended until Wednesday at noon.
McCarthy is up against a tiny but loud group of extreme conservatives who are desperate to prevent him from getting the votes necessary to obtain the gavel. The top House Republican, whose chances of becoming speaker are dwindling, has resolutely vowed to remain in the running. But as the war continues, there is growing doubt about his ability to prevail. The last time a speaker election required more than one ballot was in 1923.
McCarthy’s political future is on the line due to the bitter, protracted argument, which threatens to widen divisions among House Republicans. Additionally, McCarthy may have less leverage in his leadership position if he is elected speaker due to the deal-making he has done to appease his detractors.
McCarthy is still adamant that he won’t give up for the time being, and others close to him sum up his mindset as follows: According to a top GOP source, “We’re going to war.” “Never giving up.”
McCarthy’s opponents threaten to withhold crucial votes from the Republican leader while using the razor-thin Republican majority as leverage to force concessions. It is uncertain whether McCarthy’s efforts will be successful even though he has already acceded to several of their demands, including making it more straightforward to remove the current speaker.
Republican Divides On Display
A candidate for speaker must receive the support of the majority of House members present during the voting. If no member votes “present” or skips the vote, that equals 218 votes.
In the new Congress, House Republicans possess 222 seats; therefore, for McCarthy to get 218, he could only afford to lose four GOP votes.
McCarthy received 203 votes on the first ballot for speaker, while 19 Republicans voted for other candidates.
McCarthy received 203 votes on the second ballot, while Ohio Republican Rep. Jim Jordan received 19. Before the vote on the second ballot, Jordan nominated McCarthy to demonstrate that he was not running for the position. Nevertheless, McCarthy detractors who supported Jordan chose to vote anyhow.
Rep. Byron Donalds joined the 19 Republican members who had voted against McCarthy in the first two rounds of voting, resulting in 202 votes for McCarthy and 20 for Jordan in the third round of voting.
Tuesday morning’s House Republican closed-door meeting on Capitol Hill became hot and emotional as questions about McCarthy’s future intensified.

Deal-making And Division Among House Republicans
McCarthy spent years cultivating the conservative element of his party and made a concerted effort to remain in former President Donald Trump’s good graces after the far-right House Freedom Caucus blocked his ascent to the speakership in 2015.
Trump, who publicly supported McCarthy’s attempt to become a speaker and urged others to do the same, has provided some crucial support for him. His legislative friends have also united in balancing out his detractors.
But when a red wave failed to materialize in the November midterm elections, the razor-thin Republican majority that followed gave a small group of conservatives – long suspicious of McCarthy – the opportunity to demand things.
Over the past two months, a full-fledged race for the speakership has included tough rule-change talks, constant phone calls to members, and strategic meetings with supporters both on and off Capitol Hill.
Although McCarthy has been in a negotiation mode, some of his concessions may make it harder for him to stave off future challenges to his speakership if he wins the gavel.
McCarthy has stated to lawmakers that he would support a threshold of only five Republicans to call for a vote to remove the speaker, also known as the “motion to vacate” the speaker’s chair. This is a significant concession for him, and moderates fear it will be used as a stick to beat him in the future.
