One of her neighbors, Moe Gibbs, a prison officer at the Barnes County Jail, severely attacked Mindy Morgenstern, a 22-year-old senior at Valley City State University.
It was claimed that after unsuccessfully attempting to r*pe Morgenstern, Gibbs killed her by strangling her with a belt that left significant scratches on her neck.
Based on DNA evidence discovered under the victim’s fingernails, the murderer was declared guilty.
The investigation also showed that Gibbs had a lengthy criminal history and was responsible for numerous sexual assaults, including those against female prisoners.

Authorities found that Moe Gibbs, once known as Glen Dale Morgan Jr., had even spent time in jail from 1994 to 1998 for an unrelated attempted murder case while conducting their investigation.
Two years before the murder of Mindy Morgenstern, his DNA was an exact match to a r*pe point that remained unresolved in Fargo in 2004.
