Royce Lillard: According to Scottsdale, Arizona authorities, Molly Lillard, the 28-year-old wife of former New York Jets wide receiver Al Toon, was shot to death over the weekend by her husband, who later killed himself with the same gun.
Police have confirmed that Royce Lillard, who played volleyball for the University of Michigan from 2010 to 2013, was killed on Sunday just before 5 o’clock, allegedly by her husband of two years, Royce Lillard III, age 36.
According to a Scottsdale Police statement, when officers got to the scene, they discovered Molly in the front of the residence with several gunshot wounds.
Eight months after giving birth, the new mother was brought to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Police claim that Royce Lillard’s husband locked himself inside the home and resisted attempts to contact him for hours. He was discovered dead inside the house at 11 p.m. from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Despite being there during the murder-suicide, the couple’s child was unharmed. Police have not revealed a motive for the murder-suicide. All money raised through a GoFundMe page will go toward the couple’s little son.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Royce Lillard was a four-year letter winner for the Wolverines. As a senior in 2013, the American Volleyball Coaches Association recognized him as an honorable mention all-American.
Al Toon, Royce Lillard’s father, was chosen by the Jets in the first round of the 1985 NFL Draft and played his entire NFL career with them. Al Toon is now 57 years old.
Toon played for the group up until his 1992 retirement. He was selected for three Pro Bowls throughout his eight-year career and achieved first-team All-Pro honors in 1986.
Only two retired NFL players have ever played in fewer than 110 games while recording more than 500 receptions, and Toon is one of them.
