Police in Detroit said they discovered the body of the synagogue board president with several stab wounds on Saturday morning outside her house. The Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue in downtown Detroit said on Facebook that the victim, Samantha Woll, was the president of the board.
“We are shocked and saddened to learn of the unexpected death of Samantha Woll, our Board President,” the synagogue said. “May her memory be a blessing.”
According to a statement released by the Detroit Police Department, officers responded to a complaint of an unconscious individual laying on the ground early Saturday morning and found a “trail of blood” going to Woll’s residence. The investigation indicates that the incident occurred at her residence.
Woll’s body, which had suffered many stab wounds, was discovered by police, and she was pronounced dead at the spot. The Homicide Unit of the Detroit Police Department has been tasked with investigating the incident. The motivation for the stabbing is unknown at this time, Police Chief James White stated in a statement released on Saturday.
“Understandably, this crime leaves many unanswered questions,” White said. “This matter is under investigation, and I am asking that everyone remain patient while investigators carefully examine every aspect of the available evidence.” He requested the public to be patient as officials look into the situation.
As White put it, “it is important that no conclusions be drawn until all of the available facts are reviewed,” and he added that more details from the inquiry will be made public on Sunday. According to a statement sent to CNN, the FBI has agents in Detroit aiding local law enforcement with the investigation.
According to Governor Gretchen Whitmer, the Michigan State Police has been called in to assist local law enforcement with the investigation. My deepest sympathies go out to her loved ones, her community, and the synagogue where she worshiped.
To quote Whitmer: “She was a light in her community and she fought tirelessly to make Michigan a better place. Mayor Mike Duggan of Detroit noted that Woll’s passing “has left a huge hole in the Detroit community.” Duggan said in a statement that he and Woll had attended a party honoring the completion of renovations to the synagogue.
“It was a project she successfully led with great pride and enthusiasm,” Duggan said. She was loved by many, and the city as a whole is saddened by her untimely passing, the mayor said. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel issued a statement of condolence on Facebook, writing, “Sam was as kind a person as I’ve ever known.”
Her passion sprang from genuine patriotism and dedication to her hometown, state, and nation. Someone who worked with Woll in the past and who stated they worked on Nessel’s 2022 reelection campaign described her passing to CNN as “a devastating loss.” It had been five years since they’d first met.
“Sam was a bright ball of light,” said MoReno Tayor II. “You know, she lit up every room that she walked into. She always had a huge smile. She always gave you a firm handshake.” She didn’t deserve this and I hope they catch the perpetrator as quickly as possible,” he stated.
A social media post from Rep. Elissa Slotkin claims that Woll was formerly her staff assistant. It was said by the representative that Woll “dedicated her short life to building understanding across faiths, bringing light in the face of darkness.”
The Democrat said that Woll worked for her during her first stint in office, when he allegedly helped establish and directed the office. “My heart aches that we have lost someone so dedicated to serving others in such a senseless act. I’ll miss her relentless desire to serve & her bright smile seemingly everywhere across the Detroit area,” the congresswoman said.
