Why Did Stefan And Elena Break Up: The Vampire Diaries revolves around Elena and Stefan’s relationship. The second season’s breakup rocked the fandom to its foundations. In a recent interview, Paul Wesley told Nina Dobrev that he got “a little bit upset” with the episode’s director while filming Elena and Stefan’s split in season 2.
Why Do Stefan And Elena Break Up In The Vampire Diaries?
In the first episode of The Vampire Diaries, Elena and Stefan begin to develop romantic feelings for one another. They started seeing each other quickly after meeting, and their relationship quickly blossomed into love. However, things shifted as Katherine Pierce unexpectedly returned to Mystic Falls. Katherine was only seen in flashbacks throughout the first season.
Meanwhile, Damon was busy trying to rescue her by breaking into the tomb. Of course, she was never a part of it. And Stefan brought her back to Mystic Falls, not Damon. And in season 2, she made it her mission to cause trouble between Elena and Stefan. Besides keeping herself safe from Klaus Mikaelson and the other Original vampires, of course.
To placate Katherine, Stefan and Elena pretended to abandon their relationship with one another. But she saw through their scheme, and Aunt Jenna (Elena’s relative) ended up in the hospital. By that moment, Katherine had already wreaked havoc on their lives.
She had already made good on her threat to hurt other people, like Jeremy, by turning Caroline Forbes into a vampire. Elena ended her relationship with Stefan for good in Season 2, Episode 6, “Plan B” of The Vampire Diaries, to protect her family. Here’s how the scene unfolds:
I’m so sorry.
We were stupid, sneaking around thinking we wouldn’t get caught.
I know.
We did this. Stefan, Jenna’s in the hospital. And Jeremy could be next. All because we didn’t listen to her because we’re together. Stefan…
I know what you’re gonna say.
Then let me say it. I’ve been so selfish because I love you so much. And I know how much you love me. But it’s over. Stefan, it has to be.
Elena, I don’t…
No, Stefan. It has to be.
It was a shock to everyone involved when they decided to break up. But Dobrev and Wesley gave the show some of its most memorable moments in that episode. While filming the ending of Elena and Stefan’s relationship, Paul Wesley was dealing with his problems. Wesley told Dobrev and The Vampire Diaries producer Julie Plec that he drew on his personal experiences when acting out that scenario.
I think I did four or five [takes] that were quite nice,” he said on Entertainment Weekly’s Binge podcast. It was also confirmed that “I was dealing with a couple of problems in my personal life.” Wesley did not explain the circumstances of his private life that had him so stressed. He did his best to keep his work on The Vampire Diaries and his other projects distinct. A quote from what he had to say:
“I didn’t want to go to dark places because I was trying to keep my head above water in real life, frankly. And so [director John] Behring kept pushing me. Maybe he sensed I was going through something, so he really wanted that on screen, and I remember just getting a little bit angry at him, even though it was his job. I would do the same as a director. When you’re creating film or television, the whole point of it is, to be honest and pure.”
Do Elena And Stefan Get Back Together In The Vampire Diaries?
Wesley explained that Stefan’s real-time tears and grief were him working through his emotions concerning his own life. While it was helpful, the actor didn’t appreciate having to process his feelings before he was ready to do so. Wesley divulged:
“That crying, that whole breakup was [me] dealing with my stuff, essentially, on screen. And then I remember after we shot it I was a little relieved, but also a little angry that I had to deal with that, and then I had to go home and deal with it. But at the end of the day, it’s on screen, it works so great for the scene, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.”
Stefan and Elena’s relationship continued after “Plan B.” However, things were never the same. Forced to leave with Klaus, Stefan saw his relationship with Elena and Damon deepen while he was away.
Although Elena came to terms with her feelings for Damon, she ultimately picked Stefan since her love for him had never diminished. But after Elena turned into a vampire, she picked Damon rather than Stefan. Damon and Elena, together with Stefan and Caroline, turned out to be the show-stopping couples.
