It read, “On behalf of Azusa Pacific University, the athletics department, and the swim & dive program, our thoughts, and prayers are with the Benveniste family following Sydney’s untimely passing.” According to her web profile, Sydney is a sophomore from Redlands, California, specializing in freestyle.

Sydney’s death was reported the same week Meyer’s body was discovered on the Stanford campus. Tuesday, Stanford University issued a statement informing the university community of the untimely passing of the team captain. She was 22 years old.

According to Susie Brubaker-Cole, vice provost for student affairs at Stanford, and Bernard Muir, athletic director, Katie was tremendously devoted to everything and everyone in her environment.

“Her friends describe her as a larger-than-life team player in all her endeavors, from choosing an academic discipline that ‘changed my perspective on the world and the significant challenges we must overcome together to the passion she brought to the Stanford Cardinal women’s soccer program and women’s sports in general.

Katie was a beacon of light for countless players and members of our community. Please join us in expressing our sincere condolences to her parents and sisters,” the message continued. We offer our deepest condolences to Katie’s friends, hallmates, classmates, teammates, instructors, and coaches.

Stanford reported that the young star was discovered dead in her on-campus apartment but did not specify a cause of death. The Stanford women’s soccer team posted a photo of Katie Meyer with the caption, “We love you, Katie.”

The 22-year-old was one of the Cardinal’s most significant players in 2019, contributing to the team’s NCAA title victory. The 22-year-old stated on February 9 that she would launch a weekly talk show titled Be The Mentality, a project she had kept secret for a long time.

Girl Dad was the title of the first and only episode of the talk show, which included a dialogue between Meyer and her father, Steven. It was broadcast live on February 13. Meyer, described as “ferociously competitive,” made two penalty kick saves in the championship game versus North Carolina.
