Tony Dow Directing Career
As a director, Dow made his directing debut in 1989 with an episode of “The New Lassie”. This was followed by episodes of “Get a Life, Harry and the Hendersons, and Coach” that he directed. In the mid-to-late 1990s, Dow worked as a visual effects supervisor and director on multiple episodes of the space opera series “Babylon 5”. He went on to helm the seventh season of “Star Trek: Deep Space 9” episode “Field of Fire.”

He’s appeared in a few movies outside of television. After playing Wally Cleaver in the spoof courtroom trial film “The Kentucky Fried Movie” in 1977, he made another noteworthy cameo in the comedy sketch “The Kentucky Fried Movie.” A year or two later, in 1987, Dow appeared in the spoof comedy “Back to the Beach,” alongside Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon. In 2003, he appeared in the David Spade comedy “Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star” as a cameo role. His “Leave it to Beaver” co-star Barbara Billingsley displayed one of his limited edition bronze sculptures in her backyard garden, made using the lost-wax casting method. In 2008, Dow was one of three sculptors chosen to exhibit their work at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris as part of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts exhibition.
Tony Dow Personal Life and Mental Health
From 1980 until his demise in 2022, Dow was married to Lauren Shulkind. After a long fight with cancer, Tony died on July 26, 2022, at the age of 77. Dow opened up about his battle with serious depression in the 1990s. As a result, he made a series of self-help videos, including “Beating the Blues.”
