Reed attended Grambling State University, a historically black institution. Reed scored 26.6 points and grabbed 21.3 rebounds per game in his final season playing for the Grambling State Tigers men’s basketball team, totaling 2,280 career points.
Reed’s parents labored arduously to ensure he received an education in the segregated South. Reed, a West Side High School basketball player in Lillie, Louisiana, showed early signs of being a gifted athlete.
During his direction, the Tigers won one NAIA Championship, three Southwestern Athletic Conference crowns, and three SWC titles. Reed was also a member of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.
