YouTube Halts Removal of 2020 Election Fraud Claims!

According to a Friday statement from the video platform, which Google owns, YouTube will no longer remove false reports of widespread election fraud in the 2020 presidential race.

In a blog post, YouTube chose to strike a balance between two objectives: “protecting our community and providing a home for open discussion and debate.”

The decision, which was made before the 2024 election, reverses a measure put in place in December 2020 following President Joe Biden’s victory.

“Two years, tens of thousands of video removals, and one election cycle later, we recognized it was time to reevaluate the effects of this policy in today’s changed landscape,” YouTube stated. “In the current environment, we find that while removing this content does curb some misinformation, it could also have the unintended effect of curtailing political speech without meaningfully reducing the risk of violence or other real-world harm.”
