As one of the few Asian pupils in his community, he experienced bullying at school. Yang experienced further bullying because he was one of the smaller students in his class, was intellectually brilliant, and skipped a grade. Yang was accepted to the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth, a summer programme for bright children, at the age of 12 after scoring 1220 on a possible 1600 on the SAT. He spent the following five summers there.

With the goal of “creating economic opportunity in American communities by rallying the next generation of entrepreneurs and providing them with the skills and tools they need to create jobs,” Yang launched Venture for America in 2011 as a new nonprofit organisation.
