Before the release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 2001, actors Patrick McGoohan and Sean Connery were considered for the character of Albus Dumbledore. In the end, Harris was cast in the lead role, and it was anticipated that he would continue to portray the surface for the entire film series. He maintained his positive attitude and requested that the director of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Alfonso Cuarón, not remake his role. But why was Dumbledore recast in the first place?

Whoever wonders, “why did they alter the Dumbledore actor?” won’t get an excellent answer. Despite his aspirations to reprise his role as Dumbledore, the actor tragically passed suddenly at age 72 from Hodgkin’s disease a few months after asking Cuarón to play the part.

Ian McKellen, a fellow Lord of the Rings actor, was also a contender but declined because of his tumultuous relationship with Harris. The producers decided to replace Harris as Dumbledore with Michael Gambon after concerns about Peter O’Toole’s age and health surfaced.
The role of Dumbledore was performed by Irish-born actor Gambon in the last six installments of the Harry Potter series. Although his interpretation of the character was vastly different from that of his predecessor, it nonetheless became one of the actor’s most notable performances. This initially turned off many people, but his popularity and continued presence in the franchise won them over.
The actor made the conscious decision early on not to try to imitate Harris’ portrayal of Dumbledore and instead make Dumbledore his own. Why Wasn’t Michael Gambon In The Harry Potter Reunion?
Michael Gambon was conspicuously absent from the reunion special Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts despite playing the legendary character of Dumbledore. Gambon claimed in 2015 that he had memory loss, impairing his ability to act. Thus it is unfortunate that his ill health also brought on his absence.
No official confirmation of this has been made, and Gambon’s absence from Return to Hogwarts was not given an official explanation. However, many fans were dismayed that Dumbledore was absent from the Harry Potter Reunion.
Jude Law’s Dumbledore Is A New Focal Point Of Fantastic Beasts
The Fantastic Beasts film series now revolves around Jude Law’s portrayal of a younger Dumbledore. The 1920s wizarding world is still seen through the eyes of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). However, the narrative is centered on the rivalry between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, his lover/mortal foe (played by Johnny Depp/Mads Mikkelsen). Although Dumbledore is now the star of the Fantastic Beasts series, Newt is still significant.
Albus Dumbledore is one of Harry Potter’s most complex characters with a rich backstory that is only hinted at in the eight prominent films. While this does make the scenes with Newt feel somewhat like watching Harry Potter entirely from Ron’s perspective, it has given many fans what they want — more exploration into Albus Dumbledore.
Albus Dumbledore’s sexuality is finally explored in Jude Law’s portrayal of him, not just in the setting of the Wizarding World but also as a fictitious character in a big-budget, family-friendly, multimillion-dollar Hollywood movie. Dumbledore is gay, as JK Rowling confirmed in 2007. Grindelwald was once Dumbledore’s lover, making him more than just an evil wizard to be destroyed like Voldemort.
While there is some debate about how much of their relationship was or was not shown in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore among LGBTQ+ and Harry Potter fans, the movie finally acknowledged on-screen that Dumbledore is gay and that he and Grindelwald were romantically involved – it’s canon.
