Is Dwayne “Rock” Johnson’s Signature Wrestling Face Consisting Of A Raised Eyebrow?

The Rock Eyebrow: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (an actor and former professional wrestler) has become famous for a series of reaction videos in which he raises an eyebrow at the sound of the Vine Thud. Users began pairing the reactions, which were meant to express suspicion, with other “suspect” films in March 2021, and by September 2021, they had developed 21st Century Humor memes that had gone viral.

Origin

Dwayne, “The Rock” Johnson’s signature wrestling face consisted of a raised eyebrow, a lowered eyebrow, and a head tilt. Taking a cue from The Rock, who began referring to himself as “The People’s Champ” in 1998 in homage to Mohammed Ali, Johnson started to use the slogan “The People’s Eyebrow” in 2002. Johnson used the gesture frequently during his time in the ring and on the big screen.

Johnson made the gesture at the end of an Instagram video he posted to the rapper DaBaby on October 9, 2019. In just over two years, the video amassed over 6.3 million views and 1.5 million likes (shown below). Johnson did the expression in a video he posted to TikTok on February 19, 2021, to the tune of Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby.” The video amassed over 10.2 million views and 1.8 million likes in just over nine months.

For example, on December 6, restraint shared an Instagram meme posted initially by user swim stars.

The identity of the person responsible for the changes that included the Vine Thud soundtrack remains a mystery. Early reuploads of the videos were first seen on Reddit and YouTube on March 25, 2021. (shown below). Another upload was created in which Johnson’s face was filtered to make him look like Sus Jerma. Due to the popularity of humorous Among Us memes and his expression, which conveyed suspicion, the videos became known as “Sus Rock” during that time.

Spread

The three films went popular in March and April 2021, with many reposts across platforms, including YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and iFunny. On May 3, 2021, an anonymous iFunny user, InternalCancer, uploaded new editing to an old interview clip with Johnson.

A few 21st Century Humor edits featured the reaction videos before August 2021. One Instagram user, stabbers, posted a meme on May 25, 2021, and it quickly became viral, racking up over 77,800 views and 15,700 likes in just five months. In just three months, the article attracted over 181,300 pageviews. YouTuber Will AFS uploaded a Dee’s Big Nuts meme on September 4 that quickly went viral, amassing over 4.9 million views in less than two months.

The films, especially the Vine Thud edit of the February 2021 TikTok, gained popularity on TikTok in September 2021 as a reply format for “suspect” videos, inspiring the creation of various parody accounts, the most prominent of which is @rock.and.football. Just two months after it was uploaded on September 10, 2021, a video by the TikTok account @rock.and.footbal garnered approximately 415,000 views and 68,000 likes.

Posted by user @the rock reaction on September 14 and liked by over 930,000 people, the video became viral and has already amassed over 7.1 million views.
