Otis Perkins Car Accident: Powerlifter Otis Perkins, known as the “Black Tom Cruise,” died at age 39 from injuries he got in a car crash. Larry “Wheels” Williams, who worked out with him, wrote on Instagram that the news was accurate. On July 24, 2021, Williams wrote, “R.I.P. @black_tom_cruise. The man-made people laugh wherever he goes. They are the funniest man I have ever met.
He had everything that makes a GREAT friend. I love him more than almost anyone else I know. Accepting that he’s gone hurts. He kept a smile on his face, and his head held high no matter what life threw at him. We’ll miss you, Otis Perkins.”
On the morning of July 24, 2021, Perkins died. The car accident he was in a week before he died killed him. More than $38,000 was donated to Perkins through a GoFundMe page. It talked about what happened when he died:
Friends, at 7:37 am this morning Otis Perkins aka BTC passed away and went home to be with the Lord. He had sustained major injuries due to a car accident on 7/11 but due to a high fever and lung complications from pneumonia he couldn’t get enough oxygen to his lungs and his heart gave out. I’m here at the hospital making preparations and will update on services shortly.
At this time, the family request that you respect their privacy as they prepare for his home going service to celebrate his life and legacy. I will provide an update on his memorial as soon as possible and I will include information if you wish to send condolences. I want to thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart for your love and support during this trying time. Our collective hearts are broken.
On July 11, 2021, Perkins was in a car accident that caused his car to flip over while he was inside. He was in a convertible with the top down, so he got hurt in his eyes and back. People thought he would be okay after the accident. His official cause of death has not been announced, but BarBend.com said he likely died because of injuries he got in that crash.
It said on the GoFundMe page, “Hi, Some of you may or may not know that BTC (also known as Otis Perkins) was in a serious car crash on July 11. He’s getting better after having surgery on his back and right eye. The recovery process will be lengthy, and we need your help. Please contribute to his Go-Fund-Me account to show your support, and please send prayers and positive vibes his way for a speedy recovery.”
On July 22, it seemed like there was progress: “I promised to share as many updates as possible about BTC (Otis). BTC had a fever that didn’t go away for 4 days. I’m glad his fever is gone this morning, and his temperature is normal. The pneumonia is still making it hard for him to breathe. He is doing well, and his doctors are doing everything they can to give him the best care. Thank you to everyone who prayed. Please don’t stop, because it’s working.
