According to the investigation’s findings, which were made by District 12’s deputy chief medical examiner Dr. Wilson Broussard, Laundrie shot himself in the head before passing away. Days after going missing, the FBI ultimately located him beside a revolver made by European American Arms that was designated as a.38 special on one side of the barrel and as a.357 magnum on the other, according to the report.
The investigation notes that by the time Laundrie’s bones were found in a Florida swamp, animals had already eaten some of them. “The cylinder contained two live rounds and one expended cartridge of ammo,” the study adds.
The study offers new information on how police discovered the 23-year-old at the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park, supporting a claim made by an attorney defending Laundrie’s family after his remains were recovered in October. In a case that received widespread media attention, Laundrie was accused of being involved in the killing and disappearance of his fiancée, Gabby Petito.
Laundry returned to Florida shortly after Petito was reported missing on September 11 before going missing himself just seven days later. Authorities believe Petito was strangled to death, and on September 19, her remains were eventually discovered in a national park in Wyoming.
The FBI previously disclosed that Laundrie confessed to killing Petito in a notepad discovered nearby. Federal prosecutors in Wyoming dropped all allegations against Laundrie last month. According to Laundrie’s official autopsy report, when authorities located him on October 21, 2021, they found his remains lying in wait along a trail in the Carlton Reserve. There was proof that Laundrie’s remains had been submerged beneath three feet of water for several weeks.
The medical examiner found “moderately substantial carnivore activity demonstrated by several gouging and biting marks” on a large portion of Laundrie’s corpse. These habitats are typical of omnivores and carnivores, including canines like coyotes, wild dogs, rats, and raccoons.
The report goes on to list the bones that made up the remains as being “right and left scapulae, right humerus, right femur, two tibiae, two fibulae, two clavicles, two pelvic bones, the sacrum, one right ulna, one right radius, and several ribs.” “Multiple skulls and cranium fragments, a mandible with attached teeth that is essentially complete, and the lower portion of the maxilla with attached teeth are also noted. There are also neighboring cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae.
Laundrie’s identification had to be verified by investigators using dental records and DNA testing. A pair of green shorts, two slip-on shoes, a white silver ring, and the rusted revolver were among Laundrie’s possessions. A few feet away, searchers located a red hat with “Moab Coffee Roasters” written on it, a green backpack, a tent, and flares. Police discovered “a journal along with a wooden box that contained a tiny notebook and photographs, some of which included Brian Laundrie” about 150 feet southwest of the scene. According to the claim, Laundrie appeared in one of the images.
