She had been sexually molested as a teenager by a male relative, lived on the streets, given birth to her first child, Joey, at 18, and later lost custody of him, according to ABC, so she had already experienced some trauma before being abducted.

After her mother’s boyfriend got drunk and broke Joey’s knee, social authorities reportedly took her son away. Knight was on a dash to reclaim custody after placing the child in foster care. She once arrived at a case management meeting after it had started. Knight came upon Castro while seeking a payphone to call her case manager and recognized him as the father of one of her acquaintances.

According to Knight, Castro utilized brutal tactics to end each of her five pregnancies while she was being held captive, leaving her unable to give birth even now.

On May 6, 2013, Berry and her daughter, born while Berry was held captive, left the house when Castro was out, ending the horrible torment the three females endured. Knight and DeJesus were saved after she called the police, who raided the home. Knight was immediately treated for her wounds and malnutrition after being discovered. Castro was apprehended shortly after being seen driving nearby.
